WANdisco, a leading provider of Apache Subversion-based software and services for the enterprise, and a major corporate sponsor of the Subversion project, has announced that Subversion 1.7 is now available for immediate download on its website and also through uberSVN, its free, open ALM platform.

WANdisco staff, including Hyrum Wright, the company’s Director of Open Source and Subversion’s release manager, along with senior Subversion developers Phillip Martin and Julian Foad, have made significant contributions to the planning and development of Subversion 1.7.

Subversion 1.7 is a major new release for the Apache Software Foundation, and introduces many enhancements. Key updates in Subversion 1.7 include:

  • HTTPv2 - a protocol that enhances the performance between Subversion clients and the server by requiring fewer client-server round trips.
  • WC-NG - a complete rewrite of one of the oldest parts of Apache Subversion that  improves performance by centralising metadata storage, and provides a foundation for future supporting features such as shelving and offline commits.
  • svnrdump - a new client tool that provides the same functionality as svnadmin dump and svnadmin load, but on remote repositories. This eliminates the need for administrator access to source or target repositories on remote servers.

A complete list of what’s new is available at: http://subversion.apache.org/docs/release-notes/1.7.html.

A replay of the 'Introducing Subversion 1.7' webinar can be found on WANdisco's site here.

WANdisco will also be releasing an update today for its popular open ALM platform, uberSVN. Users will be able to start using Subversion 1.7 through uberSVN straight away. There’s a small twist, though: WANdisco will continue to ship uberSVN with both Subversion 1.6.17 and 1.7. Users will be able to switch between 1.7 and 1.6.17, through an innovative new ‘toggle’ feature in uberSVN’s configuration settings. This gives users the option of upgrading to 1.7 to try the new features, but with the safety-net of downgrading to 1.6.17 if required.

uberSVN allows developers to combine their favorite open and closed source ALM applications in a single integrated platform, with an easy-to-use web interface and Subversion’s first-ever social coding environment.

In time with this release, WANdisco is offering three migration packages for users looking to migrate to Subversion 1.7. The packages are designed to suit companies migrating to Subversion from products including ClearCase, PVCS, StarTeam, MKS, CVS, and users running earlier releases of Subversion. Each migration package includes a set amount of consulting time and an appropriated professional support contract. Customers will also receive a preferential rate should they require further consulting time.

About Subversion

Apache Subversion (SVN) is a version control system initiated in 2000. It is used to maintain current and historical versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation. Its goal is to be a mostly-compatible successor to the widely used Concurrent Versions System (CVS). In a 2007 report by Forrester Research, Subversion was recognized as the sole leader in the Standalone Software Configuration Management (SCM) category and a strong performer in the Software Configuration and Change Management (SCCM) category. Subversion is released under the Apache License, making it free software. For more information, please visit: http://subversion.apache.org.
