SVN MultiSite Plus builds on SVN MultiSite’s unique ability to eliminate the single point of failure, performance bottleneck and WAN latency of a central Subversion server by incorporating the latest enhancements to WANdisco’s patented replication technology and implementing them at Subversion’s file system layer. As a result, SVN MultiSite Plus eliminates up to 90 percent of the communication overhead between Subversion clients and the server at each location, allows servers and repositories to be added and removed on the fly without downtime, and supports all Subversion protocols. SVN MultiSite Plus delivers major availability, performance and scalability improvements over standard SVN MultiSite, as well as greater flexibility.
SVN MultiSite Plus also allows administrators to manage the entire implementation from one location.
Only SVN MultiSite Plus:
|Feature/Benefit||Description||SVN MultiSite Plus||SVN MultiSite (V4.2)|
|Patented Active-Active Replication Technology||
Automatically synchronizes Subversion repositories with every update, regardless of where changes originate (based on WANdisco's patented DConE technology)
Conflicts are identified and resolved when they occur, not days later. "Split-brain" is impossible
|LAN-speed Performance over WANs||Globally distributed development teams enjoy LAN-speed performance for both read and write operations and collaborate as if they were all at one location|
|No Single Point of Failure (SPOF)||Peer-to-peer architecture means no central server; all sites are equal peers. If sites or servers go offline, the rest remain fully operational for all users|
|High Availability / Automated Disaster Recovery||
Patented DConE technology delivers continuous hot backup by default. This is leveraged to provide Automated Recovery with Immediate Failover for 100% uptime
Eliminates downtime for unplanned outages as well as scheduled maintenance
Install, deploy and manage Subversion repository replication worldwide from a single location
Transaction dashboard with diagnostic tools proactively monitor status at each site
90% reduction in communication overhead at each site because replication is implemented at Subversion's file system layer
Significantly improves performance for larger implementations
|Repository Level Replication||Fine grained control of replication of repositories between sites for security, flexibility and efficiency|
|Dynamic Replication Group Evolution||Ability to add/remove servers and repositories on-the-fly without affecting current users|
|Configurable Quorum Schema||New node types enable increased availability and deployment flexibility for more efficient use of IT infrastructure|
|Support for All Subversion Protocols||Leverages investments in existing clients and utilities and enables significant cost savings through tools consolidation|
Subversion 1.5 introduced a write-through proxy based on svnsync and Apache 2.2.x. A write-through proxy is a mirror that will forward writes to the central server. A write-through proxy in all other respects has the same disadvantages as svnsync.
The choice of Subversion or Git is now largely a matter of preference since the introduction of Git MultiSite, which brings all the advantages of WANdisco’s 100% uptime replication to Git.
SVNbackup is not a replication solution but rather a tool used to create live backups. Since the backups are live, users can still write transactions to the SVN repository while the backup is being taken. The backup is then packaged as a tarball that can be loaded onto other Subversion repositories.
