JIRA SDK

Enterprise Class Performance, Scalability, Availability and Backup for JIRA

With WANdisco's JIRA Clustering SDK, JIRA can be clustered to perform and scale to enterprise class levels across multiple locations over a WAN, or at a single location over a LAN. Continuous hot backup, automated failover and recovery features eliminate downtime completely, even during routine maintenance.

WANdisco's technology provides enterprise-class performance, scalability and availability. We used the SDK to cluster JIRA so that we could track software development projects and customer care issues in multiple countries with a huge user base. These capabilities are absolutely critical for us.

WANdisco's JIRA Clustering SDK Alleviates the JIRA Re-indexing Problem

One challenge JIRA implementations face is the administrative overhead and downtime required for re-indexing, sometimes referred to as rebalancing, or index optimization. Re-indexing is required to maintain performance for text searches and other operations in JIRA.

With a single server JIRA implementation, user access is suspended during re-indexing to prevent database corruption. In a large implementation this can take over 4 hours each day, making 24-by-7 operation impossible.

When JIRA is clustered using WANdisco's JIRA Clustering SDK, there's no need to disrupt user access during re-indexing, or any other maintenance procedure. Automated failover and recovery features and the unique shared nothing architecture of the JIRA cluster, allow users to access other servers while re-indexing, or any other maintenance procedure takes place. Once re-indexing is complete, the server comes back online and resynchronizes automatically with the other servers in the cluster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is there a license for the SDK or any other piece of the solution?

Ans.

The SDK is distributed as proprietary software and there is a license fee. The customer can view and change the portion of the SDK that contains the source code for the APIs that support JIRA replication and provide the interface between JIRA and WANdisco's replication software. The replication source code itself is not viewable or changeable.

JIRA licenses must be purchased separately.

Q. Do I get my JIRA licenses from Atlassian or WANdisco?

Ans.

WANdisco is a reseller of JIRA. Therefore, we can offer a significant discount over what you would pay Atlassian for your JIRA licenses.

Q. Can I use my existing JIRA server licenses as part of a JIRA Cluster?

Ans.

Yes, your existing JIRA licenses can be used as part of a JIRA Cluster.

Q. Is there maintenance and support?

Ans.

There is maintenance and support for the replication software and the standard, documented APIs provided with the SDK to enable JIRA replication. However, support for extending these APIs to work with a specific customer implementation is not included as part of maintenance and support.

Maintenance and support for the JIRA application is separate from the SDK.

Q. Is there any consulting included in the price?

Ans.

Some initial consulting is included in the purchase price to allow WANdisco to prototype the solution in the customer's environment, fully scope a production implementation and provide knowledge transfer. Additional consulting may be required to complete a production deployment.

Q. Can I do this without consulting?

Ans.

You can attempt to do this without consulting. However, our experience has shown that going it alone is generally much less cost effective.

Q. Is the consulting fixed bid or time and materials?

Ans.

Any consulting required beyond what is included with the initial purchase of the SDK is done on a time and materials basis.

Q. Can I have a Sample Statement of Work?

Ans.

Yes. WANdisco can provide this upon request.

Q. Is the Zeus Load Balancer required?

Ans.

The Zeus Load Balancer is required to enable automated failover and dynamic load balancing in a WANdisco supported manner. If your implementation does not require these capabilities, or you have your own load balancer that you or some third party will support, you don't need the Zeus load balancer.

Q. What is the process for upgrades?

Ans.

If your maintenance and support is current with both WANdisco and Atlassian, you will be able to obtain the latest version of the SDK from us and the latest version of JIRA from Atlassian. You will then have the choice of performing the upgrade on your own, or with consulting assistance from WANdisco.

Q. Will the solution work with custom plug-ins?

Ans.

Consulting will be required to determine this. The customer should make WANdisco aware of any custom plug-ins during the initial consulting phase included with your purchase of the SDK.

Q. Is there a list of supported plug-ins?

Ans.

Atlassian provides a list of supported plug-ins for JIRA. However, some plug-ins may not perform well in a clustered environment. Additional consulting services may be required in such instances.
