WANdisco Plows Subversion Support Revenue Back into the Open Source Project by Employing Yet Another Core Developer

Erik Huelsmann, An Active Subversion Contributor Since 2003, Joins WANdisco's Open Source Team

San Ramon, CA June 3, 2010 – WANdisco, the enterprise Subversion company, and a corporate sponsor of the Subversion open source project with core developers from the project on staff, today announced that Erik Huelsmann is the latest core Subversion contributor to join WANdisco's open source team. Mr. Huelsmann, an active contributor to the Subversion project since September 2003, will report to Hyrum Wright, WANdisco's Director of Open Source and the release manager for the Subversion project. He, along with WANdisco's other core committers (Julian Foad, Philip Martin, Hyrum Wright and Stefan Kung) are dedicated to ensuring the Subversion open source project continues its dramatic adoption in the enterprise.

Mr. Huelsmann's contributions to the Subversion project to date include localization infrastructure, library rewrites and co-design of the new working copy library. He has also contributed to cvs2svn and other open source projects. Based in the Netherlands, Mr. Huelsmann is fluent in Dutch, German and English and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Amsterdam where he teaches courses in Subversion.

"I am very pleased to be joining WANdisco," said Huelsmann. "The company has an incredibly talented team of senior committers, as well as customers with the largest Subversion implementations in the world. Based on their progress so far, I believe WANdisco's considerable resources and expertise will guarantee the continued success of the Subversion project."

In the time that WANdisco has been involved in the Subversion project, a new Subversion roadmap has been introduced which includes a number of new features stretching out to a 2.0 release. WANdisco's Subversion engineers have developed new features in the next release including a complete rewrite of the working copy management engine to provide significant performance and scaling improvements.

"We are clearly demonstrating our continued commitment to Subversion and we're keeping our promise to plow the profits of our Subversion support business back into the project," said David Richards, President and CEO of WANdisco. "Subversion's growth in the enterprise has been nothing short of staggering and this is down to the hard work of core Subversion contributors such as Erik, Philip, Julian, Hyrum and Stefan. We are delighted and proud to have them at WANdisco."

WANdisco recently announced that the profits it receives from the sale of its Subversion support contracts go directly toward the hiring of additional Subversion committers and supporting the activities of the community. WANdisco's ability to hire senior committers such as Erik Huelsmann and others who have come on board recently reflects the success of its Subversion support services offerings.

WANdisco Offers Free Online Subversion Training

WANdisco is currently offering a series of free online one hour bi-weekly Subversion training classes through July 28, 2010. The following classes are scheduled:

  • "All About Subversion Checkouts" on June 16, 2010. Although checkout is the most frequently used Subversion command, it has many options that few users are aware of. During this course, attendees will learn how to make full use of the checkout command and understand the messages it generates under different usage scenarios.
  • "Using the Subversion Diff Command" on June 30, 2010. From simple to complex scenarios, the diff command can show the differences between versions of files as well as differences between Subversion projects. During this course, the instructor will cover the diff command using TortoiseSVN's difference tool as well as linking TortoiseSVN to other difference programs.
  • "Branching and Merging in Subversion 1.6.9" on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. During this free one hour training session, attendees will learn everything from branching and merging basics to best practices.
  • "Introduction to Subversion for Developers" on July 28, 2010. Subversion's architecture and design principles will be covered and attendees will be introduced to using Subversion.

Registration for these classes is available at: http://wandisco.com/webinar/subversion/training. WANdisco recommends early registration as space is limited.
